CHILDREN LEARN NOT ONLY THROUGH THEIR HEADS BUT THROUGH THEIR HEARTS Learning must not be about fear of failure. We must switch from controlling systems that do nothing to nurture the individual to ones that are focussed on the potential of each and every child as a creative force. Learning should be about communication and expression. It should allow us to be passionate, multi-dimensional people who care about each other and the world in which we live. The love of learning is something that we are born with. Any system that turns this into fear, frustration and boredom cannot be right. Results should be a by-product of the process rather than the purpose for it People want more out of life. They want to feel happier in themselves. Educational systems should be helping people to achieve this. Teachers are very important people. Children need to be with teachers who are happy, motivated and passionate about their work. We must create educational systems that nurture teachers as well as children. Technological advancements are rapidly making the current system obsolete. The skills needed for the workplace are changing. Learning needs to increasingly be about flexibility of thinking rather than the simple accumulation of knowledge. Employers are starting to value honesty, creativity and emotional maturity over and above academic qualifications. They want people around them who feel good about themselves and who are not afraid to take risks. Learning does not always have to be provided by regimented institutions. There needs to be a fundamental shift away from systems that introduce learning (ie 'work') as something that you only do when you are forced to, to those that cultivate an expectation of a love of learning as something that is our birthright - something that excites us and helps us grow. Children (and adults) learn more quickly and achieve better results when they are challenged by something and self-motivated. Curiosity and discovery stem from excitement, not boredom or fear. Boredom stems from a lack of our souls being nurtured. Fear stops us from being in touch with our hearts. Lack of educational diversity results in lack of innovation and creativity. We are all unique individuals. We live in dynamically different cultures. Parents and children should have choice to celebrate this fact. We are all co-creators of our world. Every child that becomes an unhappy, unfulfilled, frustrated adult contributes to an unhappy world that effects us all. By
helping children we change the world. |
